As a high school and collegiate athlete I have always considered myself in “good shape” and able to
take on any physical task that came my way. In 1997, my first year in the fire service, I stumbled upon
the Firefighter Combat Challenge and signed up for my first event. I put together a team and we
traveled to Louisville, Kentucky to give it a try, and a try is all we did.  I was quickly humbled by the
course and the caliber of athletes that we were competing against. This was no weekend softball
tournament or 5k run, this was the toughest physical task I’d ever participated in.

Since then I’ve trained countless hours in the weight room, on the track, running stairs and doing
course work. I’ve attended classes by The Cooper’s Institute in Dallas, Texas, ACE and Strength Pro
at The Arnold Classic. I’ve researched speed and agility techniques, read numerous books on
plyometrics and strength training in an attempt to climb to the top of the sport. Our trainers Andy and
Tony from
Adrenaline Sports and Fitness in Cincinnati, Ohio really helped to bring all of the previous
year’s preparation together and propel us to the top.

For many in the fire service to watch the Scott Firefighter Challenge on television seemingly places it
beyond reach for your everyday firefighter. Here are some of the best, most physically fit individuals
competing in their spare time at a level usually reserved for professional athletes. This in itself placed it
seemingly out of my grasp, a simple part time firefighter from Ohio. Then, in 2001 I was offered a full
time position with a local department which had been participating in the competition since its inception
almost 10 years earlier and that in its self was incentive enough to grab the position and go with it. At
the time it was easy to fancy myself in good condition having taken up both running and weightlifting in
college. It was soon apparent to me, after several humbling experiences at various regional
competitions, that I had far to go.

In 2007, my teammates and I hooked up with two very important organizations that transformed a
recreational team into one of the top 5 teams in the World. The first was the development of our
relationship with equipment manufacturer Pro-Tech which provided us with the sponsorship we needed
to compete throughout the country with the frequency we needed to make our mark. Our second
important meeting was with strength and conditioning Coach Andy Gaspar and Adrenaline Sports &
Fitness in Cincinnati, Ohio. Suddenly each of us had the backing of one of the best strength coaches in
the mid-west and support of all the great people at Pro-Tech.

My career in the fire service started in 1995 as a volunteer on the local fire department where I grew
up. At the young age of 31 I decided this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.  I got my first
career opportunity in 1998 at The Monroe Fire Department in Cincinnati, Ohio but in 2000 moved onto
The Village of Evendale Fire Department.

Being a former Marine I knew about the benefits of physical fitness and how important it is to ones
health.  Unfortunately over time I fell into the same category as too many firefighters in the service
today, I was a smoker, never exercised and took physical fitness lightly. The other guys at the station
decided to put together a relay team for the Firefighter Combat Challenge in 2001.  I was the alternate
that year but the relay team qualified for the World Finals in Las Vegas.  When I watched the level of
competition at Worlds, the number of superbly conditioned firefighters, I decided then and there I didn’t
want to just compete in the challenge but I wanted to be competitive!  I had my last cigarette at The
Las Vegas Airport before my flight home; it was the first time I had made a commitment to physical
fitness. I’ve trained and competed every year since and hope to continue until the day I retire.

I was born and raised on the west side of Cincinnati, attended Elder High School, and I can honestly
say my best friend is my 2 year old English Mastiff, "DUKE".  I’ve always wanted to be a firefighter, I
grew up watching my father do the job, he’s a driver for Ladder 20 in North side, one of the busiest
houses with The Cincinnati Fire Department. I attended Cincinnati State Technical and Community
College majoring in Fire Service Technology.  While attending school there I made the Firefighter
Combat Challenge Team and we were the first team in school history to qualify for the finals in Las
Vegas.

I have played many sports in my life and can honestly say that the Firefighter Combat Challenge is by
far the hardest thing I have ever done in my life!  It requires you to be in peak shape for every
different aspect of physical fitness.  If you have any weaknesses the course will expose them for you!
Our team is constantly changing up our training routines to keep at peak physical condition
combining speed, strength, power, and agility in all aspects of our training. Now, I’m part of Team Pro-
Tech 8, one of the top 5 Firefighter Combat Challenge Teams in the world.  With each year we grow
together as a team and are hoping that 2007 will be our best year ever!

I was born and raised in rural Northwest Ohio in a town called Van Wert, where I graduated from Van
Wert High School in 2005. Growing up in a small town allowed me to see how much a helping hand
can really affect a person's life. I believe that this is one of the main reasons I have such a passion
for the fire service and the brotherhood that comes along with it.  In high school I played football and
baseball where I lettered 3 years.

After graduating high school I made the move to Cincinnati, where I attended Cincinnati State
Technical and Community College, I majored in the Fire Service Technology program. It was here
where I learned of the Scott Firefighter Combat challenge, in a class called "Firefighter Agility Skills."
Playing many sports growing up I had always considered myself to be in shape, however no sport
can compare to the physical demands the Firefighter Combat Challenge. After taking the class, I had
made the schools combat challenge team where my passion for the sport developed.

The 2007 season was my first, of what I hope will be many more to come, in competing in the
Firefighter Combat Challenge. I was fortunate enough to have Steve Schreck as my instructor and
coach last year. He has given me the opportunity to be a part of Team Pro Tech 8 this year. The
guys on the team have great knowledge and insight of the sport where I hope to learn from them and
grow as a competitor.
